I've always been a Windows person and all my external HDDs are NTFS formatted.
Working with people people using Macs posed the standard challenge of not being able to write to NTFS disks when I took my HDDs over.
Once I got a MacBook for myself, the problem of writing and reading to and from NTFS drives natively in a Mac became real for me as well.
Installing a 'driver' or an app seems to be the way to solve this problem. Here are ones that promise to do the job:
An aside... In case you are wondering... FUSE is derived from File-system in USEr space. :)

- Commercial/Paid options:
- Tuxera NTFS for Mac (Thanks to +Nikhil for this one)
This used to be a part of NTFS 3G... Links for NTFS-3G include: - Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X
- Open Source & Free options
- FUSE for OS X (Open Source)This is more complex to get and use and is a successor to MacFUSE (that is no longer being maintained)
- FUSE 4X (Open Source)
- NTFS Mounter (Donation-ware)
- Seagate Driver for GoFlex external HDDs(A 'free' version of Paragon that I suspect will work for everything that is NTFS)
An aside... In case you are wondering... FUSE is derived from File-system in USEr space. :)
